The Pinder
We have no record of any holders of the office of pinder in Harley, but there are references in other areas.

From over "The Edge", in the nearby Much Wenlock Court Roll of 1805 we discover that John Patten and Isaac Hacket

“are hereby appointed and directed to impound all such (cattle, horses, asses, sheep or cattle) as shall be so suffered to go abroad and in Pound to detain and keep them until the respective Penalties shall be paid to them by the Owner thereof."

At Peterborough, a sixteenth century entry in the manor court roll records the oath of the newly-appointed Pinder (who was also Y Hayward, Beadle or Greve):

"You shall swear that you shall well and truly serve the office [of Hayward, Beadle or Greve as well as Pinder] for the year to come. You shall duly and truly Execute all such processes as shall be directed unto you from this Court, and you shall from time to time present and certify all such Pound breaches and rescues as shall happen to be made within your office, and likewise you shall present all such cattle Estreyed as shall usually come within your said office. And in everything, you shall well and truly behave yourself in your said office during the terms aforesaid. So help you, God."

A weighty and sober role indeed!
