A number of things might be puzzling you at this stage, among them, perhaps: who are Pinders, where is Harley and why is there a website?
Let’s begin with the last question! This website has a variety of purposes:
It is to record the work of the villagers of Harley in restoring their village Pound; it is to provide some information for those interested in pounds and pinfolds, or social history, or in visiting this beautiful and (sshh, whisper it) little-discovered corner of rural Britain; and it is a record of thanks to the Local Heritage Initiative of the Heritage Lottery Fund for funding this work.
There are clues below and further on this site to the answers to the other questions!
Pinders, Pounds and Pinfolds
Pinfolds, sometimes known as pounds, are small enclosures where stray animals were fastened up. The man (and it probably was a man!) in charge of the pound was a pinner, or pinder, and it was his job to round up strays. Owners had to pay him a fee to get their animals back. Click here for more.
Harley Village
Harley is located in the beautiful county of Shropshire, nestling beneath the spectacular wooded escarpment of Wenlock Edge and close to the picturesque town of Much Wenlock. Click here for more. |
